In this project, I built a handcrafted Tzedakah box using a traditional sliding-lid box design. Rather than using the sliding lid as the top, I adapted the concept so the lid functions as a concealed sliding bottom, allowing easy access to the charitable donations collected inside while maintaining a clean and simple appearance.
The box is constructed with straightforward mitered corners and features a coin slot in the top. I chose European sycamore for this project because of its beautiful flame figure, which can be seen throughout the piece. The natural beauty of the wood became the focal point of the design.
To complement the figured grain, I kept the overall design intentionally simple. The only decoration is the Hebrew word "Tzedakah" (צדקה), which is burned as an outline into the front of the box. This understated approach allows the wood itself to take center stage while clearly identifying the purpose of the piece.
I hope you enjoy watching the process of creating this Tzedakah box as much as I enjoyed making it.
